This project stands out as one of the most challenging restorations. Purchased from a private owner in Broken Hill, it had experienced catastrophic failure with the crank webs spinning, causing the piston rod to go through the side of the engine case. In an attempt to fix the issue, the previous owner had started a “conversion” project by installing a later model R75/5 engine. Fortunately, Martin retrieved the original engine case, albeit quite damaged, with the bike purchase.
Substantial work was required to repair the panels (front and rear guard) and to restore the frame to the original specification. In addition, most parts of the engine had to be restored or replaced.
The restoration took >18 months and was then sold to Brisbane based Rob who, after a couple of years of pure riding pleasure, sold it to a BMW enthusiast in Perth so he could upgrade to a BMW R69S, and experience his own BMW vintage restoration project.
